General information about Vietnam Railway System

Traveling by train is one of the safeness ways in order to discover Vietnam. To help all expats know more about Vietnam train, we are happy to show you the simple information about  how to reservation, timetable and schedule, etc

Ticket reservation

There are two main ways to book train ticket:

  • Check available ticket on an official website and go directly to train station to buy train tickets.
  • Book via travel agency: After book online, your train ticket will deliver to your hotel and you have train tickets on hand before your departure date for sure.

Type of train seat and berth

Vietnam train has only 4 types of seat: Hard seat, soft seat, hard berth and Soft berth

  • Hard seat: wooden seats in modern air-conditioned cars/ wooden seats in much older cars without air-con.
  • Soft seat: includes vinyl-covered seats
  • Hard berth: Have three tiers of beds (six berths per cabin). The upper berth is cheapest and the lower is most expensive and their level of comfort ascends by the price.
  • Soft Berth: two tiers of beds (four berths per cabin). Within this soft-berth option, the cabin quality also varies, ranging from wood-paneled one to harsh plastic one

Following information of two biggest train station of Vietnam railway:

Hanoi train station: have two areas: Area A (located on Le Duan street) is for the Thong Nhat railways, from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. Area B (located on Tran Quy Cap Street) is for others railways (to North highlands).
