Vietnam Currency

The official Vietnam Currency is Vietnam Dong (VND)

Credit cards and debit cards in Vietnam still are not popular like other developed countries. With these cards, they can only use to pay in some big cities with some services like hotel, train, restaurant, etc. There is no coin in operation nor any vending machines operated with coins. Vietnam Dong bank note has seen much change and the latest version of Vietnam Dong varies in both colors and the denominations. The larger notes are made of polymer material and the smaller ones are from cotton.

There are two types of bank notes in Vietnam, both cotton and polymer, with various values and designs. The lowest value of bank note in Vietnam at present is VND 500 (around 2.5 cents), and the highest value is VND 500,000 (around US$

ATM Machines: ATM machines are available in most cities and handy when you need quick cash. Under Vietnamese law, ATM may only dispense cash in Vietnamese Dong. Current amounts that can be withdrawn at any one time is usually very low, 2,000,000 Dong with an additional usage charge variable from 30.000d up. On March 2014 the situation is getting worse particularly for debit card using MasterCard circuit (Cirrus, Maestro), while Visa debit is accepted by more ATMs. Banks are increasing fee against foreign debit cards, both Techcombank and Vietinbank charge 55.000d (the last even without showing the amount, just a generic message "There will be fees", or even without a message). Avoid both, use SCB. Vietcombank usually charges 20,000 dong ( Tripadvisor).

Traveller cheque: is not popular in Vietnam, in case you choose this option make sure the currency in your cheque is US dollars

Credit Cards: Visa Card, Master Card are widely accepted in larger hotels, restaurants and stores in many big cities and it will cost about 3%  for commission for each transaction.

Cash: the safest and most convenient way when you travel, a couple hundred dollars in small denomination to cover the cost before you can find a bank or ATMs machines

How to call in Vietnam?

If you are calling internationally from Vietnam, first dial 00, followed by the country code for the country you are trying to reach. Use international phone cards for the best bargains when calling from Vietnam. Calling from local post offices are cheaper than using your hotel’s telephone service, but calling cards still offer the best international rates.

Vietnam Health Concern

Medical Treatment in Vietnam

The major cities of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City have hospitals that will reach the Standard of foreign hospital however the hospital systems differ considerably. Hospitals in other cities may not offer the same standards of hospitals in foreign countries.

Hotels usually have access to a doctor if you need one. If your condition is serious, you will be taken to hospital. In emergency, you may call:

Health Precautions while travel in Vietnam

  • Drink only boiled or bottled water or carbonated drinks in cans or bottles.
  • Don't handle animals (especially monkeys, cats, dogs), to avoid the risk of rabies.
  • Wash hands often with soap or water (and/or instant antibacterial hand wash).
  • Never eat uncooked meat, raw eggs, or unpasteurized dairy products. Raw shellfish is dangerous for people who have liver disease or compromised immune systems.

Health tips

  • All travelers are recommended to take their medical records along. In the event of an emergency your medical records will be of great assistance. The medical record should include your blood type, immunization record, allergies, and any medications you are currently taking (both prescription and non-prescription), You should also include your doctor's name, address, phone number, emergency contact name and phone number, and your insurance company's name, address and phone number.
  • Vaccines/Immunizations (4-6 weeks before your trip): Vaccination is particularly recommended for those who will be traveling in smaller cities, villages, and rural areas off the usual tourist itineraries.
