Vietnam’s weather and when to go

Vietnam's climate can be divided into three different zones - North Vietnam, Central Vietnam and South Vietnam. Each zone has its different weather. Below is general information about Vietnam’s weather that will help all travelers find out the best choice for their trip in Vietnam.

Northern Vietnam

The climate in North Vietnam is a humid and subtropical climate: a cool to cold season (courtesy of the northeast monsoon from November to March) and a warm to hot wet season (from April to October)

However, summer is also the rainy season, when heavy downpours render the low-lying delta area almost unbearably hot and sticky, and flooding is a regular hazard

Central Vietnam

Central Vietnam is kind of a transitionary area climate-wise from the north to the south. This region is the zone most likely to be hit by typhoons, bringing torrential rain and hurricane-force winds and usually lasts from August to November.

Southern Vietnam

South Vietnam enjoys a tropical climate all year round, with the central region lying somewhere in-between.

 There are two main seasons: the rainy and the dry. During the rainy season (from May to November), downpours are expected to happen nearly every afternoon, resulting in occasional street flooding in and around Saigon. In the dry season (from February to April), daytime temperatures in the region rarely drop below 20°C, occasionally hitting 40°C during the hottest months (March, April and May)

When is the best time to visit Vietnam?

There is no perfect time to visit Vietnam. Each destination has its best time to travel like:

• Hanoi and Sapa are great in October, November and December, as you'll see little rain and should have clear skies and temperate conditions.
• With the coastal spots from Hue down to Nha Trang is great in the first half of the year, from January through to July
• Saigon and the Mekong Delta are best from November through to February or March.
